The Indian Panorama section, showcasing the country's best feature and non-feature films, today kick started with the screening of Asian Award Winning Kokborok film Yarwng (Roots).
Inaugurating the Panorama, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Anand Sharma said the Indian Panorama was cross section of the country which brought together film makers from different parts of the country to interact with each other and also to interact with film makers from the world. "The Indian Panorama reminds us of the country's diverse culture and tradition. We are a multi-lingual, multi cultural and multi-traditional country,'' he said and added that the world would come to know about the diverse nature of the country through the Indian Panorama. Mr Sharma also cautioned that one should not forget "our folklores, language, classical music and also calligraphy even though there is an explosion of technology."
Director of "Yarwng" Father Joseph Pulinthanath said his film revolved round the large-scale displacement that happened in Tripura when the newly built Dumbur Dam submerged huge areas of arable land in the fertile Raima valley about 30 years ago. "This film is dedicated to the people who have been displaced the world over in the name of development," he said and added that he felt satisfied of doing something to the marginalised section of the society. "16 MM Memories, Movement and a Machine" also opened the non feature section in the Indian panorama. This film is a journey at two levels ''one, it is a film about those who were part of its history'' film society, members, critics and film makers, and two, t captures the enigma of a machine entering the lives of a generation and changing them for ever.
